Before Patrick Mahomes had a Super Bowl ring, an MVP trophy or a contract worth hundreds of millions, he had a high school girlfriend named Brittany Matthews. The two met in East Texas and stayed together through college, a baseball draft, an NFL draft and a move to Kansas City. Her role in his rise rarely makes the headline. Having someone at home who simply expected his turn to come probably counted for more than any outsider could measure. It is also the sort of detail that never shows up in a box score.
The years before the fame show how much of his steadiness traces back to her. Today she is Brittany Mahomes , his wife, the mother of his children and part of an NWSL ownership group.
After the 2016 season he gave up baseball to chase the NFL, and Kansas City traded up to take him 10th overall in 2017. They were teenagers when they started dating. Patrick starred in baseball, basketball and football, and nobody was sure which one he would choose. Brittany played soccer, so she knew what the grind looked like: early mornings, long drives and a goal that might never pay off. Then came the choice.
She launched a fitness business and joined the ownership group of the Kansas City Current, a club that now plays in a stadium built specifically for a women’s pro team. Brittany followed him north. She started over in a new city while he sat behind Alex Smith for most of his rookie year, learning the offense with no promise of how it would end. A year like that can wear on a young player. Plenty of first-round picks lose patience, or confidence, when the field stays out of reach. Brittany has carved out her own lane too. She is not just standing behind a famous quarterback. She is building something with her name on it.
