Kolkata: A civic volunteer and a constable posted with the Purba Jadavpur traffic guard were allegedly assaulted by a 40-year-old man while they were regulating traffic at Ajaynagar crossing on EM Bypass on Saturday.

The accused, Tapan Das , was arrested after the incident.

Civic volunteer Joydeep Ghosh, who was on duty, noticed a man obstructing traffic on the south-bound carriageway of EM Bypass, according to the complaint. Ghosh allegedly tried to remove him from the carriageway, following which the accused allegedly attacked him. The accused allegedly struck Ghosh with a brick, causing head injury. When constable Babai Sardar, who was also on duty, intervened, Das allegedly assaulted him as well. Local people intervened and rescued the injured. A traffic sergeant took the injured duo to Baghajatin General Hospital. They were discharged after treatment. Police registered a case on the basis of Ghosh’s complaint against Das, a Kalikapur resident under Purba Jadavpur police station. Download the TOI App.
