Automated detection, backed by steep fines, could therefore make enforcement more consistent

Madurai city traffic police are planning to expand Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to nearly 10 more junctions after the newly-installed system at Kalavasal, Mattuthavani and East Gate detected more than 15,000 violations within weeks.

Madurai : Madurai city traffic police is planning to expand Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) surveillance to 33 signals and other violation-prone stretches to intensify the crackdown on wrong-side driving and other serious traffic offences. Automated detection, backed by steep fines, could therefore make enforcement more consistent and increase the chances of offenders being identified,” said a senior traffic police official.

Police said the proposed network would detect wrong-side driving, signal violations and other serious offences without relying entirely on personnel deployed at junctions. “ANPR systems can capture violations continuously, unlike manual checks, where motorists may temporarily obey rules after spotting police and resume risky behaviour once enforcement is out of sight.
