2 cops among 5 held for fake currency racket in Meerut
The racket surfaced after Mohd Irshad, a resident of Mawana, complained that a group of men intercepted him while he was on his way to his sister’s house in Bhawanpur on Monday and took Rs 50,000 from him. Police seized 37 bundles containing Rs 500, Rs 200 and Rs 100 denomination notes, with only the top and bottom notes in each bundle being genuine, besides Rs 25,000 in genuine currency. “The five were arrested around midnight on Monday,” SP (Rural) Abhijeet Singh said. Police said the gang first gained victims’ trust by handing them genuine notes while claiming they were counterfeit and asking them to spend the money in the market. This helped the gang conceal the fraud,” police said.
The constables, Ashish Prasad and Prasannchit, were suspended and SSP B B G T S Murthy ordered a departmental inquiry against them. The three others arrested were history-sheeters Mohd Sajid, Faizan Ahmed and Abhishek Singh. Police examined CCTV footage and allegedly found the two constables near the spot. Their questioning led investigators to the other three accused. Once the notes were accepted, victims were allegedly persuaded to exchange larger amounts of real money for bundles presented as counterfeit currency that could similarly be circulated. “The constables allegedly stayed nearby during the transactions and later intervened, threatened the victims and gang members with arrest, and staged a seizure.
