Bijnor : A court has sentenced two men to life imprisonment for their involvement in the 2023 Bijnor jail-gate shooting case over “old enmity to establish area supremacy” in the district.
On June 30, 2023, when Rajan from Bijnor’s Shadipur village was released and walked out of the jail gate, he saw Raunak — one of the accused — waiting for him with aide Vishal Sharma. Rajan and Raunak belonged to rival criminal gangs, operating locally. Seeing Raunak, Rajan tried to run inside, but Raunak and Vishal confronted him. Head constable Ranjit Singh , a jail head warder, and on-duty constables Shivam and Rajiv Kumar were also present. A scuffle soon broke out among them and Vishal opened fire, with a bullet grazing jail head warder Ranjit’s hand. Raunak also took a shot at Rajan, but the bullet struck Vishal instead, who died on the spot. Raunak’s arrest led the cops to Harshit Chikara, a history-sheeter who had sent the duo to kill Rajan. Harshit was also held. Weapons used by Raunak and Vishal were recovered. A charge-sheet was filed by police and the court found both accused guilty after examining the evidence. Download the TOI App.
Terming the incident as a heinous crime right in front of cops at the jail gate, the court of additional district and sessions judge Shahzad Ali convicted Raunak and Harshit for murder and attempt-to-murder on Monday.
