Chennai: A 39-year-old woman who posed as a doctor and stole gold jewelry from the women’s hostel at Govt Stanley Medical College was arrested on Tuesday.

On Monday, A Raseena, 31, a second-year postgraduate student in pediatrics from Kadayanallur in Tenkasi district, went to sleep in her room after removing her two sovereigns of gold jewelry. The hostel, located on the medical college campus, had reported a series of thefts involving students’ jewellery and expensive mobile phones. Further investigation revealed six pending theft cases against her. Police said she had been posing as a doctor to gain access to the hostel and commit thefts over the past several days. Students had complained to the hostel administration about the incidents. During this time, the suspect entered the room wearing a doctor’s uniform and stole the valuables. Hostel staff noticed her walking briskly towards the exit and questioned her. She was later handed over to the Govt Stanley Hospital police. Police identified the woman as V Swetha of Lakshmi Nagar in East Tambaram. Download the TOI App.
