Mangaluru: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday urged the state govt to introduce doorstep delivery of foodgrains and undertake a digital overhaul of the Public Distribution System (PDS), citing difficulties faced by beneficiaries in accessing ration services.
Dakshina Kannada has 2,58,910 ration cardholders served by 459 fair price shops, while Udupi has 1,98,265 cardholders dependent on 295 shops, according to Salins. Together, the districts cater to a population of more than 33 lakh. Salins said BPL families were entitled to 35 kg of rice a month, while Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) beneficiaries were entitled to 50 kg under the state’s food security programme, backed by an annual budget allocation of Rs 6,200 crore.
“Though the Shakti scheme provides free travel for women in KSRTC buses, a large number of women passengers do not benefit from it because they travel on interstate routes such as between Kasaragod and Mangalore,” Madiwala said. She compared the scheme with Kerala’s Priyadarshini scheme, stating, “While Kerala allows women to travel free on interstate buses without requiring an Aadhaar card, Karnataka’s KSRTC strictly mandates Aadhaar even on intrastate routes like Mangaluru to Puttur, failing which free travel is denied.
