Bengaluru: A six-member gang, including four women, landed in the police net for allegedly extorting Rs 1 lakh from a spa owner after threatening to defame the facility. Police found out during their investigation that the same gang had extorted Rs 50,000 from a hotel in Jayanagar last month, threatening that its food caused health issues and they would complain to the health department. The accused entered the spa on Vidyaranyapura main road on Oct 3 night and threatened Nayana, stating that illegal activities were going on there, according to police. Nayana, despite knowing their claims were false, paid them Rs 1 lakh, fearing a bad campaign on social media could damage the business. “Thinking it was an easy target, the gang started demanding Rs 50,000 more.
Sensing the extortion will never end, Nayana lodged a police complaint,” a senior police officer said. Musthaq Ahmed, Tejubala, Sagaimary, Mamata, Heeramma and Priya were arrested following a complaint filed by the spa owner, identified as Nayana. They also claimed they had taken some videos of the spa, which would be uploaded on social media.
