“Though print media has faced stiff competition from digital platforms, the trend is changing with the irresponsible use of generative and adaptive AI on social media,” Prof Khan said, stressing the need for responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence. He said journalism had undergone major changes over the past decade with the rapid growth of electronic and digital media. Prof Khan said journalism should move beyond merely reporting facts and focus on finding solutions to pressing social issues. Social exclusion, urban poverty and inequality continued to persist, and journalists could help address them by seeking stakeholders’ views and bringing them to society, he said. Prof Khan said the university would establish a ‘Mukta Vedike’ to provide students with a platform to showcase their talents and express their views. Presiding over the programme, JM Chandunavar, chairman of the department of mass communication and journalism, described newspapers as “open universities” and urged students to cultivate the habit of reading to broaden their knowledge.
He urged journalists to help society distinguish between right and wrong and stressed the importance of effective communication and a strong command of language. He advised budding journalists to read newspapers thoroughly to improve their language and communication skills. Senior journalist Venkatraj KG delivered a special lecture on creative writing and language use in newspapers. Download the TOI App.
