The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Kanpur: Four blackbucks have died at Kanpur zoo in 15 days, with wildlife experts from the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Izzatnagar-Bareilly, identifying bacterial infection as the cause of death.

Senior scientists M Karikalan and Akhilesh Kumar , accompanied by technician Adarsh Kumar, reached the zoo and inspected the blackbuck enclosure. They also conducted a postmortem examination of one animal and took viscera and other samples to Bareilly for testing. The experts advised zoo veterinarians on treatment and medicines to prevent the infection, which occurs in the blood. Zoo administration is also spraying lime and medicines in the enclosure. Last week, three blackbucks had died with doctors citing bacterial infection as the possible cause. Viscera from one animal was also sent to a Bareilly laboratory, but the report is awaited. Another male blackbuck died two days ago despite treatment, prompting zoo administration to call IVRI scientists. The animals have been dying while moving around.
