Mangaluru: Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has rolled out a targeted special inspection drive across its limits to maintain a clean and beautiful city. Spearheaded by the civic body’s dedicated Nuisance Detectors squad, the extensive crackdown covers prominent commercial establishments, markets and public spaces.

Since the drive started in commemoration of Gandhi Jayanti , MCC has imposed on-the-spot fines on offenders under the Solid Waste Management Bylaws 2019. Rs 7.2 lakh penalty in a single day During a massive special inspection drive conducted by a team of 100 MCC officials on Wednesday, a total of Rs 7,20,500/- in fines was collected from commercial establishments in the city that violated rules. The team of officials have collected on-the-spot penalties of Rs 2,000 to Rs 25,000 based on various violations. A penalty of Rs 25,000 was imposed on a boarding and lodging establishment in Surathkal for not segregating waste at source and non-renewal of its trade licence. A penalty of Rs 25,000 has also been levied on a private hospital for not segregating biomedical waste from other waste. Similarly, MCC officials have levied on-the-spot penalties up to Rs 15,000 on various restaurants in the city for not segregating waste and disposing of non-segregated waste.

MCC commissioner Rahul Ratnam Pandey said, “This punitive action was taken on the spot against establishments for failing to segregate waste, using banned plastics, unhygienic conditions, and failing to renew their trade licenses. Officials also carried out inspections of business establishments, residential apartments and other public places, said an official. The inspection squad is strictly monitoring compliance across five critical focus areas: failure to segregate waste at source, littering along roadsides and in open public spaces, encroachment of pedestrian footpaths by vendors, use of banned single-use plastics, and operation of commercial outlets without renewed trade licences. MCC officials urged both local business owners and the public to actively cooperate with the inspection teams, stressing that sustainable civic cleanliness relies heavily on community discipline, responsible waste disposal, and strict adherence to municipal regulations.
