Kochi: The Ernakulam additional district and sessions court-V sentenced a 51-year-old man to 10

Kochi: The Ernakulam additional district and sessions court-V sentenced a 51-year-old man to 10 years’ imprisonment and fined him Rs 10,000 in an acid attack case.

The accused, Bony, a resident of Fort Kochi, attacked a youth named Shednov Antony with acid at Thamaraparambil in Fort Kochi on Sept 18, 2014. Fort Kochi Police registered a case under Section 326 (A) of Indian Penal Code. Rishad, 36, of Chengamanad is the arrested. The police had earlier arrested Dhanesh Muraleedharan, 38, of Thalayolaparambu, who was driving the vehicle used to transport the sand.

The victim completely lost vision in his left eye and partially lost vision in his right eye in the attack.

He is accused in seven similar cases registered at the Aluva, Nedumbassery and Cheranalloor police stations, said the police. The police said strong action would be taken against the sand-mining gang. Judge T Madhusudanan pronounced the verdict. Youth held for illegal sand mining : Aluva Police arrested one of the key members of a gang allegedly involved in illegally extracting and transporting sand from Periyar River. Rishad is the owner of the vehicle. The police intercepted the truck carrying the sand near Mahilalayam Bridge in the early hours of Sunday while it was reportedly being taken towards Kollam. The investigation team was led by circle inspector P M Shameer and sub-inspector Ranjith Mathew, under the supervision of deputy superintendent of police Baiju Paulose. Civil police officers Mahin Shah Abubacker, Mohammed Shahin and Shibin Thomas were also part of the team. Rishad was produced before a court and remanded in custody.
