Gold seized by DRI

Bengaluru: An attempt by two passengers to conceal gold packets under baggage trolleys was foiled by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) at Kempegowda International Airport Wednesday, with officials seizing 12 biscuits worth nearly Rs 1.8 crore. However, DRI officers intercepted the operation and recovered 12 gold biscuits in two packets. The plan was to avoid carrying the smuggled gold through customs, according to DRI. DRI Bengaluru zonal unit officials placed the two passengers arriving from Kuala Lumpur under surveillance. The two were seen attaching packets containing gold under trolleys before walking away from them. Instead, the packets were deliberately left concealed beneath the trolleys, which would subsequently be used by unsuspecting passengers to carry their luggage. The two passengers monitored the movement of trolleys and passengers using them. Investigators suspect their intention was to allow the trolleys to cross the customs-controlled area before retrieving the concealed gold. Download the TOI App.
