KMC headquarters
Kolkata: The South 24 Parganas district magistrate has published the final list of reserved wards for the upcoming Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) election, bringing several changes from the draft list, particularly in the allocation of seats reserved for women and Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates.
The civic body, which is currently being run by an administrator, is required to have an elected board in place by Dec 7. The reservation exercise follows the delimitation of KMC wards, which has increased the number of wards from 144 to 209 — an addition of 65 wards. The draft reservation list was published by the South 24 Parganas administration on Sept 16, inviting claims and objections till Sept 30. More than 25 objections were subsequently received from individuals and political parties, following which a hearing was held before the final list was prepared. The final list reserves 12 of the 209 wards for SC candidates, with four earmarked for SC women. The final SC-reserved wards are 25, 31, 52, 75, 125, 144, 154, 158, 192, 197, 200 and 201. The final list has 70 such wards, with four of them being SC women seats. The wards that have been reserved for women are 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 26, 29, 33, 36, 39, 42, 45, 48, 51, 55, 58, 61, 64, 67, 70, 73, 77, 80, 83, 86, 89, 92, 95, 98, 101, 104, 107, 110, 113, 116, 119, 122, 126, 129, 132, 135, 138, 141, 145, 148, 151, 155, 159, 162, 165, 168, 171, 174, 177, 180, 183, 186, 189, 193, 196, 202, 205 and 208. Also, wards 25, 75, 154 and 197 have been reserved for SC women.

Polls are expected to be held in the last week of Nov. However, three of the SC-reserved wards in the final list were not part of the draft list, underlining the extent of changes made after the objection process. The allocation of seats for women has also undergone substantial changes. The changes are expected to have a significant bearing on candidate selection, with several prospective candidates and councillors in the last board having to reassess their electoral plans in light of the new reservation roster.
