Chitradurga : Members of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene on Wednesday deposited Rs 2,998, collected as alms from shopkeepers, autorickshaw drivers and the public in Molakalmuru town, into the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The members had collected the money on Oct 1 from traders and others near the private bus stand and along the main roads of Molakalmuru to protest the state govt’s drought relief of just Rs 2,500 per farmer. The Rs 2,998 collected was remitted to the relief fund through a demand draft drawn from the account of district president Mallahalli Ravikumar.
The organisation’s state working president, Bedareddihalli Basavareddy, said the collection was meant to highlight what he termed the govt’s insult to farmers hit by recurring drought. The organisation submitted the payment receipt and other documents to Molakalmuru tahsildar Dr Nagaveni, urging the govt to reconsider its drought relief package and avoid further humiliation of farmers.
