Bappa Gucchait arrested for attack on Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya’s house

Kolkata: Kolkata Police on Friday arrested 29-year-old app-bike rider Bappa Guchhait for allegedly attacking senior advocate, former MP and former Kolkata mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya’s residence, triggering a sharp political confrontation between chief minister Suvendu Adhikari and the CPM leader. Police have arrested Bappa Guchhait, son of Sushanta Guchhait, within 24 hours of the incident. Guchhait, a resident of Boalia near Garia, was arrested at 4.05 am. He said if the post remains uncorrected within 24 hours, cops will officially request the social media platform to remove it.

Adhikari gave Bhattacharya 24 hours to edit a social media post blaming “Hindutvawadis” for the attack, warning of legal consequences. FIRs have been lodged against Bhattacharya at Garfa and Kasba police stations following public complaints, the CM said. The apprehended person is a worker of the Trinamool Congress and has photographs with party members,” Adhikari said. “The govt does not support such acts under any circumstances,” he added. Additional CP (Crime) Kunal Aggarwal said charges relating to destruction of evidence, fraud and forgery were subsequently added. Asked if he would approach the HC or felt intimidated by the FIRs, he said: “No, I will not.

“We have taken the attack on Bhattacharya’s residence seriously and I directed the Kolkata Police to identify and arrest those involved. Police initially booked him under stringent provisions covering deliberate damage to property, disturbance to life, outraging the modesty of a woman, disturbing public peace, and criminal intimidation. Investigators traced him through CCTV footage along EM Bypass and are probing possible external involvement. “We have done our job. We have arrested the person who attacked his residence and taken action on his written complaint. But he is also not above the law,” Adhikari warned. “He should immediately step down, as he is betraying the constitution… . Let them move… I welcome those who lodged complaints, and I will offer them a packet of rasgullas!”

Let him take action — I will bring him before the court, and he will face the music.
