Kanpur: Anti-Narcotics Task Force arrested an alleged trafficker and seized 2,500 bottles of banned codeine-based syrup during a raid in Dhakanapurwa, Babupurwa in the city on Friday.

Officials estimated the consignment’s international market value at Rs 2 crore 95 lakh.

During interrogation, Thakur allegedly said that the syrup had been procured from a firm in Mangolpuri, New Delhi, and was to be sent using a fake bill to a trader’s address in Sarnath, Varanasi. He also told the police that another consignment linked to the same gang and firm had been seized in Prayagraj a few days earlier. Babupurwa police station in-charge Neeraj Ojha said a case had been registered against Thakur following a complaint lodged by the task force.

After that seizure, the remaining stock was collected from a Kanpur transporter and hidden in a Babupurwa warehouse for supply to Prayagraj, Varanasi and nearby districts. Police are tracing the Delhi firm, the Varanasi business network and others allegedly linked to the interstate narcotics syndicate.
