Mumbai company loses Rs 36.5 lakh after email spoofs Japanese: The wider industry impact

Ahmedabad : A Thaltej-based digital recharge services company has alleged that unidentified cyberfraudsters carried out 496 unauthorised transactions worth Rs 17.5 lakh through its online recharge platform after gaining unauthorised access to its system.

The discrepancy was detected on May 5 during reconciliation of the company’s financial records by the proprietor and his business partner, according to the complaint. A review of registered users and transaction records revealed 496 transactions worth Rs 17,45,201 that were not initiated by the company or any of its authorised users. The company had earlier reported the matter on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and obtained an acknowledgement number.

QPS Solutions Pvt Ltd operates a platform that provides mobile and direct-to-home (DTH) recharge services through its website, software and mobile application. Distributors and retailers use digital wallets on the platform to process recharges and are required to deposit the corresponding amounts into the company’s bank account. They found that payments corresponding to several recharge transactions had not been credited to the company. The company subsequently contacted the developer responsible for its website, software, and mobile application. The developer allegedly informed them that an unidentified person had gained access to the platform and carried out the recharge transactions. The complaint alleges that the fraudsters accessed the website’s admin panel by stealing login credentials and one-time passwords (OTPs) or by hacking the system through other means. They allegedly used the company’s wallet balance to process mobile recharges and diverted the corresponding funds to their own bank accounts.

The company’s proprietor lodged a complaint with Ahmedabad Cybercrime police on Friday, alleging that the transactions were not carried out by the company or any of its authorised distributors, retailers or application programming interface (API) users.

Ahmedabad Cybercrime police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the unauthorised access, the recharge transactions and the bank accounts that allegedly received the proceeds.
