Police said some people had moved into a shop veranda near the bus stop due to a light drizzle, thus averting a larger tragedy.
The incident occurred around 7pm when the private bus, travelling from Nagampadam bus stand towards Changanassery, ran onto the pavement where people were waiting for buses, police said. Eyewitnesses told police the vehicle was speeding. Those injured included bus passengers and pedestrians, police said. Eyewitnesses said a few others ran aside on seeing the bus.
Locals, fire and rescue personnel and police pulled out those trapped under the bus and moved them to general hospital. Police took the driver, Athul Biju of Kurichy, and the conductor into custody.
