Hosapete (Vijayanagara): The family of ambulance driver Ram Babu, 44, donated his eyes after his death on Saturday, offering two visually impaired people hope of sight.

“Through the eye donation, his service to society continues even after his death,” Santosh Kumar said. Following the family’s consent, both eyes were retrieved and handed over to the eye bank at Vijayanagara Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) in Ballari. KM Santosh Kumar, president of Bhagat Singh Blood Donors Association in Hosapete, and private ambulance driver Zamir facilitated the donation. Staff from Rotary Free Eye Hospital in Hosapete contacted specialists from VIMS eye unit after the family agreed. A medical team travelled to Hosapete and retrieved the eyes at Ram Babu’s residence in the presence of his parents, wife, children and siblings. Various organisations had honoured Ram Babu for his service during the Covid pandemic.
