Lucknow: Members of various student bodies were detained by police on Sunday as they marched from Parivartan Chowk towards the Vidhan Sabha to support a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar over alleged “vote theft. ” Demonstrators carried black balloons and used spray paint as they moved through central Lucknow. Police stopped the march near KD Singh Babu Stadium, detained the protesters and transported them to Eco Garden, students said. Lohia Vahini national vice-president and LU student leader Abhishek Srivastava said the agitation would continue until chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resigns. “Students have a responsibility to raise their voices on issues concerning democracy and citizens’ voting rights,” he said, adding that they could not remain silent amid questions about the electoral process. Student leaders Manav Rawat and Shubham Kharwar said citizens have a right to peaceful protest and that it should not be curtailed through permission requirements.
The action came as the group sought to highlight concerns about voting rights and what they described as threats to democratic values. Download the TOI App.
