Lucknow: A 42-year-old security guard was arrested on Sunday for allegedly shooting a street dog dead in the Talkatora area of the city earlier this week. The incident took place on Oct 6 when Tiwari was allegedly riding home after completing his night shift, according to police. Police launched an investigation and examined CCTV footage from cameras installed in and around the area. He claimed that he lost his temper and fired a shot from his licensed double-barrel breech-loading (DBBL) gun, killing one of the animals.

During questioning, Tiwari allegedly told police that a group of dogs had started chasing him while he was returning home. Police identified the accused as Sandeep Kumar Tiwari, a resident of Muneshwarpuram in Badshahkhera, who is employed with a private security agency. During the investigation, police found that a street dog was shot and killed after being hit by a bullet. The case came to light after Charu Khare and animal rights activist Anu Bose, associated with animal welfare organisation AASRA The Helping Hands Trust, lodged a complaint at Talkatora police station and sought action against the person responsible for the killing. Investigators tracked the route taken by the suspect before and after the incident, helping them establish his identity. Police seized the licensed firearm, one empty cartridge case, four live cartridges and the weapon licence as part of the probe.

Based on the CCTV footage and other evidence, police identified Tiwari as the accused and arrested him on Sunday.
