The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Bijnor : Four men were arrested on Thursday for allegedly extorting money from vehicle owners by using information about their overdue finance instalments obtained through a repo app, police said.

The case came to light after Khalid , a resident of Chippiparai locality in Nagina, lodged a complaint on Tuesday, alleging that four men intercepted him on the road and demanded Rs 56,000 in exchange for his motorcycle. When he resisted, the accused allegedly abused him, snatched Rs 5,500 in cash and fled with his motorcycle. A case was registered under sections 309(4) (robbery), 308(2) ( extortion ), 352 (intentional insult) and 126(2) (wrongful restraint) of BNS.

A joint team of Special Operations Group, surveillance unit and Nagina police arrested the four accused – identified as Bippu alias Sethi of Saiyyabada locality, Anurag of Moradabad, Pushpendra Kumar of Kotara in Nagina and Akash Kumar of Sinkarpur Basi in Najibabad – and recovered the motorcycle, police said. During interrogation, the accused allegedly told police that they used a repo app to obtain details of vehicle owners who had defaulted on loan instalments. Police said if the owners failed to pay the demanded amount, the accused would seize their vehicles and deposit them with Ajay Associates, a finance agency in Haridwar.

They then threatened to repossess the vehicles and demanded money from the owners. The agency’s role and the possible involvement of others in the alleged racket are being investigated.
