Sadhugram is the designated area at Tapovan where thousands of sadhus and seers are accommodated during the Kumbh

The civic body had earlier proposed felling of around 1,700 trees to facilitate the development of the site. Public hearings were held in Nov 2025, but several activists remained dissatisfied with the proposal.

Municipal commissioner Manisha Khatri said the civic body would adhere to all court directives while carrying out the project. We will fully comply with the court’s directions,” she said. Officials said the project layout and infrastructure planning would be modified, wherever required, to protect existing trees and comply with environmental regulations.

However, the proposal drew strong opposition from environmentalists and residents, who argued that the project should be carried out without disturbing the existing green cover. “We have decided to develop the proposed Sadhugram at Tapovan without cutting the trees as the NGT’s stay on tree felling continues. If the stay is not lifted, the project will be executed within the existing constraints. With preparations for the Kumbh Mela gathering pace, the civic administration has now opted to move ahead with the development work without waiting for the legal dispute to be resolved.
