The aim is to ensure that children can play safely without getting hurt,” an MCD official said. “All facilities in a park will revolve around the chosen theme, with modifications made according to the available space to ensure the concept is fully realised…. Climbing a tail or crawling inside a sculpture’s body will turn a visit into an adventure,” the official said.
New Delhi: Three of MCD ‘s seven theme-based parks are expected to open by Nov, and the remaining four are scheduled for completion by the end of Jan. The civic body is putting the finishing touches to the parks. The themes keep in mind that these will be children’s play areas and the spaces have to be engaging for them. The parks feature large sculptures designed around animals. They will have slides, play equipment, seating areas, dustbins and other facilities. The idea is to transform conventional parks into imaginative spaces that will attract children. For example, a portion of Ajmal Khan Park will have the octopus as a theme. At the M Block Park in Greater Kailash-II, Garuda will be the main attraction. Parks near PVR Saket will have insect themes, while the Swasthya Vihar Park near Laxmi Nagar District Centre will have marine life sculptures. A park in Mayur Vihar Phase-III will have a large peacock. The peacock’s wings will be slides, its legs will be stairs and the lower part of its tail will be a seating platform. At the octopus-themed park, its tentacles will double as slides. The marine-themed park will feature dustbins shaped like sea creatures, while benches, swings and play equipment will resemble underwater life forms such as tortoises, jellyfish and starfish. Mowgli will be the theme of a park near the Mayapuri DTC depot. A park near Janakpuri West metro station will have an aeroplane theme. “We are giving the finishing touches to three parks in Janakpuri, GK-II and Saket. Several interactive play structures have been installed, while work on spreading sand around them is under way. The sculptures are being made using reinforced plastic, glass-reinforced cement fibre and other composite materials to ensure durability and safety. The parks will also incorporate activities such as puzzles in which children can match pictures of creatures with their names. The seven projects are being implemented under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme. Download the TOI App.
