New Delhi: National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the member secretary of the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to appear virtually at the next hearing and explain the status of its laboratory and the availability of equipment for groundwater testing around the Ghazipur landfill.
The direction came after DPCC informed the tribunal that it did not have the required equipment to test groundwater and that a tender had been floated for its procurement. The committee submitted that testing would be undertaken once the equipment was procured.
In an earlier order, NGT had directed DPCC to collect groundwater samples from at least 20 locations around the landfill and analyse them in accordance with the Solid Waste Management Rules. The sampling was to cover the prescribed radius and later extend up to 1.5 km from the landfill, with an analysis report to be submitted before the tribunal. The tribunal has listed the matter for further hearing on Jan 19, 2027.

Meanwhile, counsel for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) sought additional time, stating that he had been engaged only a day before the hearing and required time to obtain relevant documents and prepare the case.
Observing that DPCC was expected to have a fully equipped laboratory, a bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and expert member Dr Afroz Ahmad directed the member secretary to place on record the status of the laboratory and the equipment currently available with it. The tribunal was hearing a matter initiated on the basis of media reports concerning a fire at the Ghazipur landfill site.
