Agra: A Delhi Police sub-inspector was injured after a wanted accused allegedly snatched a service pistol from a head constable and opened fire while being escorted on the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura early Wednesday. The accused was shot in the leg when the police team retaliated after he allegedly fired at them while attempting to flee.
The incident took place between milestones 63 and 64 of the Yamuna Expressway under Naujheel police station limits when a special staff team of Delhi Police’s North-West district was bringing accused Wasim Akram alias Lambu (29) from Nandi Gram in West Bengal to Delhi. Police said Akram was wanted in a case registered at Jahangirpuri police station under BNS sections 103(1) (murder), 221(1) (obstructing a public servant in discharge of his duty) and 132 (assault or use of criminal force against a public servant).
Mathura DSP Amar Nath Yadav said, “An FIR was registered at Naujheel police station against Akram under section 109(1) (attempt to murder) and relevant sections of the Arms Act. The four-member Delhi Police team was escorting Akram back to the national capital when he asked to take a short break to relieve himself, according to Naujheel SHO Anjeesh Kumar. The police team then opened retaliatory fire, hitting Akram in the leg,” the SHO said. “As he stepped out of the police vehicle, he snatched the pistol of head constable Harish , who was part of the escort team, and tried to flee. The team warned him to stop, but Akram fired at the cops while fleeing. A bullet hit sub-inspector Ajay Kumar in his left arm. After receiving an alert about the shootout, a team from Naujheel police station reached the spot and rushed the injured accused and the sub-inspector to the community health centre in Naujheel. They were later shifted to Mathura district hospital, where they were undergoing treatment. A separate FIR was subsequently registered at Naujheel police station on the complaint of Delhi Police head constable Narsi Ram. Further legal proceedings were underway. Download the TOI App.
