Because he suspected his wife of having an extramarital relationship and did not believe the child was his, police said on Sunday, agra: A 30-year-old farmer was arrested for allegedly throwing his 11-month-old daughter into Yamuna. The baby remained missing as police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams continued searching the river.
She managed to hold on to the bridge railing and called for help, following which passers-by caught Rinku and alerted police on 112.
The family said Rinku Kumar took his wife, Lakshmi Devi, and daughter Vanshika out on the pretext of shopping and stopped at a bridge near their village, Nere, purportedly to take photographs. He then allegedly threw the baby into the river and, when Lakshmi raised an alarm, tried to push her in as well. Vanshika was swept away by the current and had not been found at the time of filing this report.
Marital Disputes Emerge Following June 2024 Marriage
Rinku and Lakshmi were married in June 2024 but had been living apart for several months due to ongoing marital disputes. Lakshmi’s family has accused Rinku and his relatives of harassment related to dowry demands. They allege that Rinku pressured Lakshmi’s father to transfer a plot of land in the village into his name.
