The batch included 478 men and 60 women.

Addressing the new constables, director general of police (prisons and correctional administration) K L N Rao said prison staff were not merely custodians of security and discipline but also key participants in the reform and rehabilitation of inmates as responsible citizens. He said jail personnel assume charge of inmates after judicial processes and must work towards their correction, rehabilitation and reintegration into society. Rao called prisons the third pillar of the criminal justice system, along with the police and the judiciary. Prison service, he added, required courage, sacrifice and dedication, with personnel expected to support genuine behavioural change among inmates. Trainees were instructed in indoor and outdoor subjects, including the Prison Manual, the Prisons Act, parole and furlough rules, the Constitution, human rights, RTI provisions and criminal laws such as the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.
