Ahmedabad : A 20-year-old engineering student was allegedly cheated of Rs 5,000 by two men who convinced him to hand over cash on the promise that the amount would be transferred to his bank account, police said. The man claimed his sister studied at the same engineering college and that he urgently needed Rs 5,000 to pay her fees, according to the complaint. As he did not have Rs 5,000 in cash, the men allegedly took him in their autorickshaw to an HDFC Bank ATM, where he withdrew the amount and handed it over to them.
To gain the student’s trust, he allegedly said his father would transfer the amount and showed him a mobile number. The student told police that the two men assured him the money would be credited to his account. The accused then dropped him near his college gate and allegedly told him that his money would be transferred within five to seven minutes and that they would return shortly.
When no transfer was received, the student tried calling the number provided by the men, only to find it switched off. He later learned that another student had allegedly been cheated in a similar manner. The student, who stays in a PG accommodation in Navrangpura and is pursuing electrical engineering, was heading to college around 11am on Thursday when a man sitting in an autorickshaw approached him near Gulbai Tekra.
