Ahmedabad: A 46-year-old woman from Shela lost Rs 2.62 lakh after allegedly opening a fake wedding invitation APK file received on WhatsApp . On Sept 16, Rs 99,000 and Rs 1.62 lakh were debited from her account, followed by another Rs 1,000 transaction on Sept 18. After noticing the unauthorised transactions, the woman contacted the cybercrime helpline 1930 and registered a complaint.

She received a message on Sept 12 from a known contact containing a file titled “Wedding Invitation Card.apk”, according to her complaint registered with Bopal police on Thursday. Trusting the sender, she opened the file and granted the permissions sought by the application. The woman later realised that her phone had been hacked. She later learnt that the sender’s WhatsApp account had also allegedly been compromised and the APK file was sent from the hacked account. She subsequently approached police and submitted bank transaction details and WhatsApp screenshots. Download the TOI App.
