Ahmedabad: A retired bank employee, who is also a hobby numismatist, was allegedly fooled into shelling out more than Rs 64,000 after being told that his old Rs 5 coin was worth nearly Rs 81 lakh. The 68-year-old filed a complaint with Naranpura police on Wednesday against two unidentified persons, stating that he had come across a YouTube video on Sept 11 about old currency and unwittingly walked into a cyberfraud trap. Realising he had been cheated, the man contacted the cybercrime helpline 1930 and filed a formal complaint with Naranpura police.
The complainant alleged that the fraudsters first sought Rs 520 for an “official card” and later demanded several more payments through QR codes, claiming they were required for a govt-approved card, GST and other formalities. What followed was a series of demands for money. The victim was repeatedly assured that the payments would be refunded.
