The 48-year-old treasurer alleged that six men assaulted him with wooden sticks, damaged his jewellery and wristwatch worth an estimated Rs 15 lakh, and threatened to kill him. Ahmedabad: A dispute over messages in a WhatsApp group escalated into an assault on a Chandkheda society’s treasurer on Monday.
The treasurer said he was in the society office with another member around 4.45pm on Monday, discussing arrangements for Dussehra celebrations, when a resident arrived and started arguing with him. He estimated the loss at around Rs 15 lakh, claiming the chain and bracelet, weighing about 12 tolas together, were missing.
A broken ring and wristwatch were recovered, according to the complaint. He was added back after he apologised. His complaint states that the resident held a grudge against him over an attack about two years ago. The treasurer had then backed a complaint against him and the society manager after an alleged fight at the society gate involving outsiders. The complaint states that another man and an unidentified accomplice arrived in a vehicle carrying sticks and attacked him before threatening to kill him. The complainant has alleged that his gold chain, bracelet, ring and wristwatch were damaged during the assaults. The accused allegedly left in a white SUV and a black car. The treasurer was taken by ambulance to a civil hospital after complaining of severe pain. Chandkheda police are investigating the allegations against the six men.
The dispute began after a society member was removed from the WhatsApp group for repeatedly posting the same photograph, according to a police complaint filed by the treasurer on Wednesday.
