Investigating authorities sought his custodial interrogation regarding an alleged Rs 155-crore tax evasion scheme linked to a political party. Ahmedabad: A local court on Thursday remanded Surendra Tiwari to six days in police custody following his arrest by the CID (crime).
The prosecution has alleged that the party received donations totalling Rs 519 crore during the financial years 2023-24 and 2024-25, resulting in an alleged tax loss of Rs 155 crore to govt. The investigators wanted to determine the alleged deduction of 8-9% commission before the remaining cash was returned to the original donors and the roles of intermediaries. Investigators wanted to find out who authorised the opening and operation of the party’s bank accounts, signed cheques and took financial decisions. Tiwari facilitated the racket by accepting political donations on behalf of Swatantra Abhivyakti Party and returning the funds to donors in cash, minus a commission fee, according to officials. Seeking his remand, the prosecutor submitted that it is to be found out whether Tiwari conspired with others to obtain bogus political donations in the party’s name. They also want to identify the donors, their PAN and contact details, and the channels through which the money was routed. Download the TOI App.
