Ahmedabad: Dholka Town Police have arrested jeweller Amitkumar Soni, owner of Om Jewellers in Dholka, for allegedly cheating investors of Rs 74.5 lakh after promising attractive returns on silver investments. An FIR was registered for criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust under BNS, along with provisions of Gujarat Protection of Interest of Depositors (In Financial Establishments) Act, 2003. Soni and his son Parth allegedly won customers’ trust by claiming that investments in gold and silver would generate good profits, according to the FIR. Police said a preliminary probe has revealed a similar earlier complaint involving members of the same family.
Police said the accused initially returned investments with profits, prompting investors to put in larger amounts. After repeated assurances went unfulfilled, the investors approached police. Police sought his custodial remand after questioning him, and a court granted remand till Sunday. Cops have urged anyone who invested cash, gold or silver with the jewellers and did not receive returns to contact Dholka Town Police.
Dholka Town police inspector A R Dhawan formed a team and arrested Amitkumar on Wednesday.
