A 50-year-old doctor in Ahmedabad has filed a complaint alleging that he was defrauded of Rs 59 lakh by the operator of a private hospital located in Mithakhali. The doctor claims he was invited to establish a laboratory on the hospital’s premises, only to have it shut down later. The Navrangpura police registered the complaint on Thursday, which names a partner in a company associated with the hospital as the accused.
Doctor Alleges Fraud in Laboratory Venture with Hospital Operator
A doctor operating a laboratory in Vasna has filed a complaint alleging fraud involving a hospital operator. The two parties entered into a memorandum of understanding on May 3, 2025, which was intended to last seven years with a three-year lock-in period. According to the complaint, the hospital operator, introduced to the doctor by a mutual friend, claimed to be managing a hospital in Mithakhali and offered space for the doctor to set up a laboratory, promising profitability through hospital support.
As part of the agreement, the doctor agreed to pay a refundable deposit of Rs 50 lakh and share 35% of the laboratory’s monthly revenue. The doctor claims to have issued three cheques totaling Rs 50 lakh to the operator. Of these, two cheques for Rs 17 lakh each were cashed in May and June 2025, while a third cheque for Rs 16 lakh was not encashed.
The police report indicates that the doctor alleges the operator misrepresented the venture, leading to the laboratory’s closure and resulting in a total financial loss of Rs 59 lakh.
Alleged Financial Dispute Leads to Laboratory Shutdown
A doctor has accused an operator of failing to return Rs 25 lakh, which was transferred on July 14 under the promise of repayment by July 31. The funds were sent via Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) from the doctor’s firm to the operator’s real estate business account, citing urgent financial needs.
When the repayment was requested on the due date, the operator reportedly avoided the issue. In August, the doctor learned that a deal related to the hospital had been canceled and that a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) would be established to keep the laboratory operational.
Despite numerous assurances from the operator, the money was never returned. In November 2025, the hospital management allegedly compelled the laboratory to cease operations.
