Gandhinagar : Gujarat has installed 9 lakh residential rooftop solar systems with a combined capacity of 3,408MW, achieving 90% of its target of 10 lakh installations by March 2027 under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
The state accounts for 18.2% of all residential rooftop solar systems installed across the country under the scheme, making it one of the leading adopters of household solar power, according to an official statement issued on Monday. Scheduled caste (SC) and scheduled tribe (ST) households installing systems of up to 2.18 kWp are required to contribute only 5% of the prescribed cost, while other consumers contribute 10%. The state govt has introduced additional financial support, particularly for smaller household consumers, to encourage rooftop solar adoption.
The state govt bears the remaining benchmark cost after adjusting the Centre’s financial assistance and the beneficiary’s share.
The statement said Gujarat’s installed renewable energy capacity stood at 55,511.46MW as of Sept 30, 2026, representing 18.5% of India’s total renewable energy capacity. Solar power contributes 36,234.5MW, accounting for 21% of the country’s installed solar capacity. Wind energy capacity has reached 17,043.7MW, giving the state a 28.8% share of India’s installed wind power capacity.
Officials attributed the strong uptake to Gujarat’s consumer-friendly solar policy framework. The state allows net metering, enabling households to offset electricity consumption with surplus power supplied to the grid. There is no restriction on connected load for residential rooftop solar installations, and consumers can sell excess electricity.
