AHMEDABAD: A 39-year-old woman said she had made her position clear before marriage: she did not want a husband with a tobacco addiction. She claimed that she contributed Rs 10,000 from her salary every month towards household expenses and also paid for a domestic help for some time. The complainant said she had earlier approached the women’s police station in Dec 2025.

Her mother-in-law would knead dough and keep it in the refrigerator and also store cooked dal and vegetables, asking her to eat the food later, according to the complaint. Her husband, she alleged, agreed to quit tobacco but resumed consuming it after the marriage, and also took up drinking and gambling. The woman, who holds a master’s degree in journalism, has now filed a complaint with the Nadiad women’s police station against her husband and in-laws. In her complaint, she also alleged marital estrangement, restrictions at home, workplace-related taunts and physical assault. The woman also alleged that her husband subsequently stopped maintaining physical relations with her. Despite her repeated requests, he allegedly refused to resume marital relations, the complaint stated. She further alleged that her in-laws prevented her from preparing fresh food and repeatedly served her meals that had been refrigerated and reheated. The woman alleged that she fell ill after eating such food. The woman further alleged that she faced opposition from her in-laws over her job in a news channel and was subjected to taunts and quarrels. The woman alleged that her husband suspected her and assaulted her during an argument in Jan. She claimed that he later asked her to leave the house and threatened to kill her if she refused. Several counselling sessions and mediation attempts were subsequently held, but the dispute remained unresolved, she alleged. The woman has now filed a fresh complaint alleging physical and mental harassment, assault, abuse and death threats against her husband and in-laws. Download the TOI App.
