The vacation should allow students to spend quality time with their families, explore personal interests and develop essential life skills, according to the guidelines. Ahmedabad: In a student-friendly initiative ahead of the Diwali vacation, Ahmedabad City district education officer (DEO) has directed all govt, grant-in-aid and non-grant-in-aid primary, secondary and higher secondary schools to keep holiday homework to a minimum and encourage joyful, activity-based learning. The circular, issued by DEO Rohit Chaudhary , advises schools against burdening students with excessive written assignments, lengthy projects, multiple worksheets and repetitive writing tasks during the holidays. Holiday assignments should be limited, engaging and suited to students’ age, class and academic level, with children able to complete them independently. Schools have also been instructed not to assign activities requiring expensive materials, compulsory online participation or paid applications, keeping in mind differences in students’ socioeconomic backgrounds. Emphasising learning beyond textbooks, the DEO has encouraged reading, drawing, storytelling, sports and experience-based activities. Students should spend time with parents, grandparents and elders, learn about family traditions and participate in household chores. For Class X and XII students preparing for board examinations, regular revision and time management remain important. The advisory also encourages students to limit unnecessary mobile phone use, social media and online gaming, while promoting outdoor games, reading, yoga and exercise. Other areas highlighted include cyber safety, protection of passwords and one-time passwords (OTPs), awareness of cyberbullying, firecracker safety, environmental protection and cleanliness. Students have also been encouraged to share the festive joy with underprivileged people. Download the TOI App.
