The civic body has made it mandatory for such establishments to declare the complete list of ingredients on packages and use proper labelling including the green and red signs for vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. It is also mandatory to clearly list the proportions of refined flour (maida), sugar, and other ingredients used in items like bread and biscuits. He added that it’s a consumer’s fundamental right to know what a food product contains and if it’s vegetarian or non-vegetarian. “For this, each food product must be tested at a recognised food laboratory and get an ingredient analysis certificate. These details must then be printed on the package.
The Food Safety and Standards (labelling and display) Regulations, 2020, and the Food Safety and Standards (packaging) Regulations, 2018 were also discussed. Guidance was also provided on FBOs’ responsibilities under Food Safety and Standards Act’s Section 26, mandatory licensing/registration under Section 31 and strict compliance with hygiene and sanitary practices outlined in Schedule 4. FBOs were instructed to clearly display all mandatory label information, such as name of the food product, complete ingredient list, allergen declarations, nutritional information, vegetarian/non-vegetarian logos, net quantity, batch/lot number, date markings (manufacturing, expiry, best-before), FSSAI logo and licence/registration number, mandatory details of the manufacturer/packer.
On Tuesday, health and food safety department officials met representatives of Gujarat Bakers Association and FBOs to make them aware of their statutory obligations under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 provisions governing pre-packaged foods. In the past month, teams from the health and food safety department sealed three bakeries in the city’s east for unhygienic conditions and violation of other regulations. Manufacturers must also have their products tested at registered food laboratories to substantiate the ingredients listed on the package. Any violation of these directives will lead to their sealing.
