Ahmedabad : A 43-year-old Bharuch resident arriving from Dubai was apprehended by customs officials at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport after allegedly attempting to smuggle 582.7 grams of gold into the country without declaring it. The seized gold is valued at Rs 89 lakh, officials said.
During examination, officials allegedly found five foreign-origin gold TT bars of 999 purity (24 karat) concealed in the pocket of his trousers.
Officers of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU), Ahmedabad Customs, intercepted the passenger based on intelligence developed through passenger profiling after he arrived on a flight from Dubai, according to a customs department release.
The passenger was apprehended, and the gold was seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
