Gandhinagar : The state health department has caught 38 suspected bogus doctors during a 15-day statewide crackdown, with FIRs registered against 35 of them. The drive involved 298 teams working in coordination with local police, crime branches and special operations groups (SOGs), an official statement said on Tuesday.
Rajkot recorded the highest number of cases, with 17 bogus doctors booked, followed by Surat with nine, Gir Somnath with three and Surendranagar with two. The remaining cases were reported from other areas, with one case each. The health department and police have launched further searches and surveillance to track down such suspects, the statement said.
Sharing details of the operation, health minister Praful Pansheriya said the teams conducted intensive checks across all districts, including Ahmedabad, Surat and Rajkot, to identify individuals practising medicine without valid qualifications or registration. The minister said district-level committees had been constituted under earlier govt directives to curb the menace. These committees, which include taluka health officers, medical health officers, police personnel, health supervisors and local revenue officials, use informants to identify suspects and facilitate raids. Officials also found that some suspected practitioners had shut their clinics and dispensaries ahead of the raids.

Pansheriya said the crackdown would continue even after Diwali and the festive season, asserting that the govt would not allow unqualified practitioners to endanger public health. He appealed to citizens, NGOs and community representatives to report anyone practising medicine illegally to the nearest PHC, CHC, police station or SOG. Download the TOI App.
