Volunteers for Bengaluru’s parks

The weekend began with a de-weeding activity at Jakkur Lake Park, led by Jala Poshan, and a waste segregation and clean-up drive at BDA Doddakallasandra Park-2, organised by Youth for Seva.

Manoj Kaulgud of Adamya Chetana said, “Bengaluru’s ‘Green City’ identity needs to be nurtured by all of us. Bengaluru: The spirit of Dasara found its way into the city’s neighbourhood parks over the weekend, as citizens came together for another round of activities under #IamBengaluru – Volunteer for Parks, presented by Multigen, in association with Kristu Jayanti University and supported by Greater Bengaluru Authority. Volunteers braved the rain to keep the momentum going. Youth for Seva conducted a clean-up and waste management session at Netaji Park, Rajajinagar, while Adamya Chetana led a plantation and sapling maintenance activity at Pushpanjali Park, Banashankari. At Senior Citizens Park, JP Nagar 7th Phase, Women of Wisdom organised a community collection drive, bringing a spirit of sharing to the weekend. Our association with The Times of India through #IamBengaluru gives us a wonderful platform to take this message to more citizens, especially the youth. Together, we can encourage people to understand the value of native plants and take greater ownership of the city’s parks. From caring for greenery and exploring biodiversity to sharing with the community, the activities reflected the many ways Bengalureans can bring the spirit of the festive season into the public spaces they share.

On Sunday, volunteers explored Bengaluru’s urban biodiversity through a nature walk and biodiversity survey at Rachenahalli Lake Park, led by Naturalist School.

Because it gives citizens a practical way to care for their surroundings, satya, software professional from Yelahanka: I’ve been volunteering for environmental and educational causes for 15 years, and #IamBengaluru has impressed me. Volunteer Voices Prakash, agriculturist from Banashankari: As more buildings and apartments come up around Bengaluru, planting and nurturing trees in our neighbourhoods has become even more important. Trees give the city shade, clean air and a healthier environment, and I hope more Bengalureans will come forward to care for the greenery around them. We don’t have to depend on govt for everything; giving even an hour a week can make our neighbourhoods better while giving us a sense of satisfaction. Sanjeev, Deepanjali Nagar resident: I’ve been volunteering at Jakkur since April and have seen the surroundings become cleaner and better with every passing week. The association between Jala Poshan and TOI gives more citizens an opportunity to participate, and I hope more people will step forward to keep their neighbourhoods healthy for future generations. Janani, student, NMKRV College: The park has always been a place for me to escape the traffic, unwind and spend some quiet time. Guru Prasanna, south Bengaluru resident: For me, volunteering has always been about consistency. Being part of Adamya Chetana’s Green Sunday programme has shown me that meaningful change comes from showing up week after week to restore Bengaluru’s ecological balance, with TOI ’s #IamBengaluru giving it more impetus. I hope more Bengalureans make tree planting and nurturing a regular part of their lives. Parks are used by children, youngsters and senior citizens every day, so keeping them clean is a way of welcoming everyone and encouraging a healthier lifestyle. I love walking and running in parks myself, and they give me a lot of energy. Download the TOI App.
