Annamalai University professor held for sexually harassing research: The wider industry impact

CUDDALORE: The Annamalai Nagar police in Chidambaram have arrested Annamalai University head of the department (HoD) of chemistry N Rajendran on charges of sexually harassing a 29-year-old research scholar.

In her complaint, the research scholar stated that Rajendran made derogatory, obscene, and defamatory remarks on her personal life and used deeply offensive language when she visited the department on July 15. Police registered an FIR against Rajendran under sections 79 (insulting the modesty of a woman), 75 (4) (sexual harassment), and 351 (2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and sections of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act. Rajendran was remanded in judicial custody and lodged in the Cuddalore Central Prison. Annamalai University registrar placed Rajendran under suspension pending inquiry after he was booked by the police pending inquiry. Download the TOI App.

A special team from Annamalai Nagar police station nabbed Rajendran in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, on Monday.
