Chennai: A 45-year-old woman from Andhra Pradesh was found murdered near an agricultural field at Vellakkulam in Thottareddy Kuppam village, near Uthukottai in Tiruvallur district, on Friday morning. However, the exact nature of the substance and the cause of the injuries can be confirmed only after the postmortem examination and forensic analysis, police said.
Police said she had come to the area to attend a marriage and was staying at a relative’s house in Vadattur Kandigai village near Thamarai Pakkam Koot Road. Police sources said she had burn-like injuries on her face. Police suspect that a corrosive substance may have been used in the killing to disfigure her face. The deceased was identified as Aruna , wife of Manjunatha and a resident of Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh. She had left the house for her hometown last night. Though police initially suspected that acid had been used in the attack, they later found that the injuries did not appear consistent with an acid burn. Instead, they suspect that rock salt mixed with another substance may have been poured on her face.
A police team led by Uthukottai Inspector Devaraj sent the body to Tiruvallur Government Hospital for autopsy. A mobile phone found near the body was also seized for investigation. Police have ruled out sexual assault or theft of jewellery from the woman. A case has been registered. Police are checking her phone records and questioning a few of her relatives.
