Chennai: A 42-year-old Commercial Taxes department employee died after falling from the third floor of a building while attempting to escape from police who had come to question him in connection with a case in Puzhal on Saturday.
Police said a woman lodged a complaint against Rajapandian in July, accusing him of attempting to misbehave with her. The deceased was identified as R. Rajapandian, a resident of Vinayagar Koil Street in Kathirvedu, Puzhal. He was employed at the Commercial Taxes Department office in Chengalpet. Based on her complaint, Puzhal police registered a case under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act. During the investigation, police reportedly obtained a bond from Rajapandian not to harass the victim again. However, he contacted the woman again and demanded the money she owed him. On seeing the police approaching, Rajapandian reportedly rushed to the third floor of the building in an attempt to escape. Police personnel and residents rushed to his rescue and took him to Government Periyar Nagar Hospital, where he received first aid. He was subsequently shifted to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for further treatment. Puzhal police have registered a case and are investigating.
Following this, a police team visited his residence on Saturday to question him about the violation.
