1k illegal, dangerous buildings demolished in a month

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

New Delhi: Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) demolished at least 30 properties daily from Sept 6 to Oct 10 in a crackdown on illegal and dangerous buildings after the collapse of a paying guest accomodation in Satya Niketan killed seven people.

The corporation demolished 1,046 properties across its 12 zones, sealed 282 properties, and pulled down 47 dangerous buildings, according to govt data released Sunday. Among the 12 zones, the maximum demolition action was recorded in Rohini (158 properties), followed by South (121) and Shahdara North (115). City-SP, West and Shahdara South zones saw action against 87 properties each, closely followed by Karol Bagh with 85. The remaining zones included Central, where action was taken against 75 properties; Civil Lines (63), Keshavpuram (61), Najafgarh (45) and Narela (62). Of the sealed properties, 87 were in City-SP zone, 41 in Shahdara North and South, 27 in Shahdara South, while 23 were in the Central zone. Karol Bagh accounted for 13 of the 47 dangerous buildings demolished.

Civil Lines, City-SP and West zones reported eight each, while Narela, Rohini, Keshavpuram and South had two each. Shahdara South and Najafgarh reported one each. Gupta said the campaign would continue, adding that agencies must act according to rules in cases involving illegal construction and unsafe buildings. Following a building collapse in Seemapuri, one unsafe building was demolished and Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board issued notices to three other houses. Download the TOI App.

Chief minister Rekha Gupta earlier directed MCD to intensify its demolition drive against illegal structures and dangerous buildings across all zones.
