New Delhi: A BCom graduate, a former tuition centre operator, a mobile shop worker and three others allegedly joined hands to execute a gunpoint robbery involving Rs 1.5 crore in cash in central Delhi. Police have arrested five of them.
The robbery took place on Sept 7 when a payment collector, accompanied by a colleague, was travelling in an auto from Church Mission T-point in Old Delhi towards Safdarjung with two bags containing Rs 3 crore. Two of them allegedly aimed a pistol-like object, later identified as a pistol-shaped lighter, at themand positioned themselves on either side of the auto before snatching one of the bags containing around Rs 1.5 crore and fleeing towards ITO. After four days of analysing all inputs, police arrested Suraj Pandey (20) from Anand Vihar bus terminal on Sept 12, when he was allegedly trying to flee to Uttar Pradesh. DCP (central) Rohit Rajbir Singh said the robbery was planned by Rinku (27), a BCom graduate who had worked as an accountant in a shop in Karol Bagh. Adarsh Tiwari (22), a BCom and BEd graduate who had run a tuition centre in Najafgarh, was seen on CCTV footage near the spot where the complainant boarded the auto and was riding close to the vehicle. Deepak Goswami (25), who worked at a mobile shop in Karol Bagh, was allegedly riding pillion during the robbery. Sandeep alias Sandy (21), who worked as a rider for a delivery application, allegedly rode the motorcycle. Adarsh and Goswami were arrested from Nawada on Sept 13, while Sandeep was arrested from Faridabad the same day. Police said Rs 17 lakh and an iPhone were recovered from Pandey. Another Rs 32.5 lakh and a motorcycle allegedly bought with the proceeds were recovered from Tiwari and Goswami, while Rs 11 lakh was found on Sandeep and Rs 37.5 on Rinku. Prince (26), who allegedly helped conduct reconnaissance and arrange resources, is absconding.

Police said the victims were selected near the T-point outside Old Delhi Railway Station while carrying the bag. The cash belonged to a businessman involved in property-related business. When the vehicle reached the Geeta Colony flyover on Outer Ring Road around 8pm, three men riding a black motorcycle intercepted it. The suspects allegedly tracked them after they boarded the auto and intercepted them at a relatively secluded location. Pandey allegedly disclosed the names of the other members of the group. Rinku asked others to conduct a recce around Chandni Chowk to identify people carrying large amounts of cash. Suraj Pandey, who worked as a delivery rider at a private company in Faridabad, allegedly occupied the middle position on the motorcycle. Rinku was arrested from Ludhiana, Punjab. Joint CP (central) Madhur Verma said investigators examined CCTV footage to reconstruct the routes taken by both parties, besides analysing their movements before and after the robbery. A case of robbery has been filed along with under Arms Act. Technical surveillance and field inquiries were also carried out.
