Delhi Police probes videos of alleged assault on cops
NEW DELHI: Delhi Police is analysing videos shot on mobile phones to identify police personnel, including women officers and constables, who were allegedly assaulted during the Congress protest near Jantar Mantar, with an FIR likely to be registered under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to assault on public servants, obstructing them in the discharge of their duties and other relevant offences, sources said. Police are examining the footage to establish the sequence of events and identify those allegedly involved in assaulting personnel deployed for crowd management. The videos are being scrutinised as part of the police’s investigation into the alleged attacks on personnel during the protest. The development comes amid a series of confrontations between police and protesters during demonstrations in central Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Delhi Police had recently highlighted the alleged difficulties faced by women personnel deployed at protest sites, with a senior officer claiming that women cops had been dragged, pushed and manhandled while trying to control crowds.
