New Delhi: AAP MLA Jarnail Singh and other party functionaries were detained by Delhi Police Tuesday when they were protesting outside the police headquarters, demanding an FIR against minister Parvesh Verma for slapping a man during road inspection in Vikaspuri Sunday.
The AAP functionaries said they wanted to submit a complaint to the police commissioner but were stopped by police. They also alleged that the cops “pinched” the women protesters. AAP MP Sanjay Singh said that despite “such a serious incident”, no FIR was registered against Parvesh Verma, but instead FIRs have been registered against AAP functionaries, including MLA Jarnail Singh, who had raised the issue of corruption in road construction under BJP govt. “The clothes of a woman councillor from the Dalit community, who has been fighting for people’s rights on behalf of AAP, were torn in front of the police commissioner’s office,” Singh alleged, adding that it reflects the state of law and order. It was not torn by any cop,” a police officer said. Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said following the “unfortunate” incident in Vikaspuri, police registered cases against Verma, Jarnail Singh and others. It is an attempt to vitiate the political atmosphere,” he said. Kapoor attacked Jarnail Singh too, saying that “revelations” about him, “such as allegations of him harassing MCD and govt employees and making demands from them following the incident, have exposed his record and AAP is trying to divert attention. Countering this, Jarnail Singh said the court had reprimanded the police, which filed an FIR against him in 2015 “without any complaint being filed”. The same police is “not registering an FIR despite a complaint, witnesses and evidence against Verma,” the AAP MLA said.
They alleged that “police personnel manhandled AAP workers, misbehaved with women and tore the clothes of a woman councillor. Police officials denied the allegations of manhandling and misbehaviour. “The kurta of the AAP worker got caught somewhere inside the bus and was torn. “Despite this legal action, AAP is continuing to protest…. Police have registered a non-cognizable report against Verma, not an FIR.
